Fact about Chiang Rai & Golden Triangle.
CHIANG RAI : The ancient city of Chiang Rai in the northest province of the same name was established in 1262 by King Mengrai, founder of Lanna Kingdom.The Mae Sai River further north of Chiang Rai and at the border town of Mae Sai, serves as a natural boundary between Myanmar and Thailand. Although Chiang Rai has a history dating back to more than 750 years, extensive structural and cultural changes has left it nearly bereft of ancient ruins.
The Mae Kok River is a feature of Chiang Rai that must be experienced. It runs from Thaton in northern Chiang Mai
to Chiang Rai city and then on to meet with The Mekong River at Chiang Khong. The Mae Kok runs through the valley south of Doi Mae Salong, to the Myanmar border on the far north, sprawling mountains cover the land and there are many smaller roads leading into less settled areas between Mae Chan and Mae Sai.
THE GOLDEN TRIANGLE.
During the 19th. century, hilltribe groups from China moved to this area, selling opium and later on, heroin.
IN its heyday, the Golden Triangle was the largest drug market in the world.
The Golden Triangle has an enermous area of 76,000 h.u. highland unit, roughly covers 5 northern provinces in northern Thailand, west of Myanmar and east of Laos. Chiang Rai province is in the very heart of opium producing areas, the spot actually designated the Golden Triangle is the place near Chiang Saen where three countries meet.
The Golden Triangle used to produce three-quarter of the world opium supplies. The name was called by the press and repeated usage in the mass media. The sensational fiction has given it a popularity. |

DAY 1
Start trip early morning at 7.00 a.m., drive up north of Chiang Mai city to Mae Rim District to visit the colourful orchid nursery and butterfly farm, see a hundred species of orchids. Then keep on driving north to The Young Elephant Traing Center in Chiang Dao,enjoy the transquility bamboo rafting along the Ping River for an hour, back to the camp and enjoy feeding bananas to the elephants, seeing them working in timber task and have an hour elephant ride into the dense jungle which sheltering with the dense deciduous forest. Back to the camp and have lunch on bank of Ping River. After lunch - drive through valleys and mountainous areas, heading north to Tha Ton and visit Tha Ton Temple to soak the beautiful landscape of northern countryside and villages. Drive along the previous opium smuggling route to visit tribal village such as Akha, Kayan Bigeared and the famous Pardaung Longnecked who wear the brass rings on their necks.Then drive through Mae Chan and Chiang Saen, visit the sunset local market near Mekong River and Laos and 10 minutes drive to Golden Triangle. We will launch the hot air balloons before check-in.

DAY 2
After breakfast at the hotel - visit the opium museum and go to see giantic Chiang Saen Buddha ( clasified as the oldest and the most beautiful Buddha statue in Thailand ) and visit the ruined temple in Chiang Saen. Here comes ! the highlight of this trip is the speedy boat ride on The Mekong River, sails along Thailand-Laos border and around the Golden Triangle area, also visit Laos for an hour ( time is available to wander around or enjoy shopping for goods from Laos and Vietnam ). Then continue our journay to Mae Sai ( Thailand - Myanmar border ) by taking s shot cut drive through teak reforestation, visit the border and you will enjoy yourself wandering along the busy border market.

Lunch is served at the border. Then drive up to Doi Tung to visit the Royal Villa of The Princess Mother and its beautiful botanic garden. An hour drive back to Chiang Rai city and stay overnight in Laluna Resort. You will be picked up again at 6.45p.m., will drop you in Chiang Rai Night Bazaar for dinner & shopping.

DAY 3
After breakfast at the hotel, drive to the main port for an hour boat ride to the Red Karen Village ( elephant trainer's village ), enjoy the beautiful sceneries of farmlands and villages on banks of Mae Kok River and observe the way of living of Karen tribe ( almost a million Karen People ' re living in Thailand ), then drive back through the valleys and Chiang Rai and go straight to the white temple at Wat Rong Khoon which built by one of the great Thai artist who want to pay something back to his motherland. Why not try and taste the coconut ice-cream and baby pineapple, that is a must. Then 15 minutes drive to Charin-rose garden for lunch, highly recommend to taste homemade pies and rose tea. After lunch - drive to Mae Kachan and visit the holy fish lake to feed thousands of fish ( one of many ways to make merit in our culture & belief ), then take a visit at the hot spring and straight to Chiang Mai.
