Part of the ancient Lanna Kingdom , Thailand's upper north , long sequestered behing high mountain ranges , has developed a charm and character all of its own while keeping a quintessentially Thai heart .Until the rail line pushed north in the 1920s, an expedition to Chiangmai was more harzardous and time-consuming than a trip to Europe. The reason behind the region' s  name of Lanna ( a million rice field ) becomes clear then visiting this fertile area , and the north is also noted for its rich variety of flowering plants , particularly temperate -zone species which are at their best during the cool months.

Chiang Mai city was built in 1296 by King Mengrai , King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Payao , to help in selecting a site .They decided on a fertile plain between Doi Suthep Mountain and the bank of the Ping River .The new city , surrounded by a moat and walls measuring 2 by 1.6kms. , was named Nopphaburi Sri Nakornping Chiang Mai.

Chiangmai 's history as a city of economic , religious , and political importance has given it very deep cultural roots .It has been continuously habitated for over 700years . It has its own dialect , architecture and cuisine which give it a sense of  cultural stability while its natural beauty has earned it the soubriquet of ' Rose of the North '.

8.10a.m. Drive north to Mae Rim District for 15 minutes to visit the beautiful blooms orchids and butterfly farm , then carry on trip for half an hour to the Young Elephant Training Center in Chiang Dao Area as classified as the most beautiful jungle areas , go to feed the young elephants and see them bathing in the river and working in the loggings .

Then take an elephant ride for 1 1/2hr. elephant ride into the dense jungle to visit the Lisu tribal village - get off the elephant and wander in the village to observe their mode of living , then back to the camp to have lunch on bank of Ping River . Then have another hour - enjoy the transquility on a bamboo rafting . After rafting - straight back to Chiang Mai.

8.10a.m. Drive north to Mae Rim District for 15minutes to visit the beautiful blooms orchids and butterfly farm , then carry on trip for 20minutes drive to the elephant nursery and training camp in Mae Sa , walk to the nursery to see the babies and young elephants in natural surroundings , enjoy the great shows from the talented elephants who do the timber task , dances , play soccer and even painting .

Then have an hour elephant ride to The Padaung Longnecked Village and also see many tribes such as Meo , Lahu and Red Karen . Then lunch will be provided at Tiger Kingdom ( able to play and take pictures with big tigers and cubs but pay extra ) .

What to do when you have got your own leisure :
1. It is the good idea to visit the China Town in Warorot Market . Activities in this day market start very early morning before sun rises . If you are looking for some beautiful flowers , variety of local fresh fruit , dresses for men & women , gold chains etc. It is Yes that is worth visiting . If you are looking for what to eat , also suggest you to taste some local food there . Let 's try the fried chicken or grilled pork with chilli sauce and eat with sticky rice .This market can keep you busy for a couple of hours.
 
2. Take the local taxi and tell driver that you want to go to Chiangmai Zoo . You pay for the entrance fees and pay for monorail to tour around the zoo . The two highlights are a couple of panda bears and the aquarium.
Have to pay for the fees too. There are many local taxis ( Song Taew - red truck taxi ) waiting clients in front of the zoo.
 
3. Ancient Temples in the old city area - you can walk from one to another in a walking distant .
Suggest you to wear long pants/ skirts to cover knee and shirt / T-shirt or dress that covers shoulders.
When wandering around the temple or holy sanctuary , you must walk around clockwise .
As walking counter clockwise , when joining funearal processions.
 
4. The Central Airport Plaza - the grand shopping mall in the city . Suggest to take the local taxi there aqnd back by local taxi in front of the mall. Remember that no bargain inside the department store but can bargain at local shops outside the department store.
