Chiang Rai was a provincial capital in the Old Siam .
It was here that King Mengrai ruled in the 13th. century. From here
the young leader rode into Chiang Mai after the fall of Pagan in 1247 . King Mengrai formed a strong alliance with the king of Sukhothai and eventually the entire north was under his rule. He consolidated his powers by merging the different city states in the North and found The Lanna Thai Kingdom in 1296
( Land of Million Thai Rice Fields ) with Chiang Mai as the capital .
For Centuries , Chiang Rai thrived on a culture based on simple subsistence farming . Today , capitalizing on the hilltribe culture and the attraction of the mighty Mekong River , the city is coming on its own as a tourism destination. The city derives its beauty from its majestic mountains .As one heads out of town Myanmar with its terrain an lush vegetation comes into view.. Eastward , the landscape changes . The timeless , virgin territory of Laos rises over the fast - flowing Mekong River. As mountain peaks gradually lowers, there is an awareness of a cultural change.
Chiang Rai is one of the last remaining tourist frontiers of Thailand. It is the northernmost province situated on the Kok River basin 416 meters above sea level , with an area of 11,678 square kilometers.

DAY 1 - 7.00a.m. early morning - heading north of Chiang Mai city for 15minutes
stop is made at Orchid Nursery & Butterfly Farm
get some knowledge with the orchid story .Then half an hour drive to the Young Elephant Training Center in Chiang Dao - the most beautiful jungle areas with Ping River flowing through , have an hour on a primitive
bamboo rafting to soak the peaceful moment among the deciduous forest . Back to the elephant camp
to feed the young elephants , see elephants bathing in the river and see them working
in loggings. Have an hour elephant ride into the dense jungle that sheltered by thick trees. |

Lunch is served on bank of Ping River . Drive through valleys and mountainous for 2 hours to Thaton
visit the hilly temple of Wat Tha Ton to enjoy the view of northern countryside and its farmlands, then have
a long-tailed boat ride for half an hour to Thai Yai - local village , passing the hugh area of orange orchards
and many cash crops . Then continue trip to tribal villages such as Akha , Parlong Big Eared
and the famous Padaung Longnecked .

DAY 2 - 8.15a.m. Visit the giantic Chiang Saen Buddha ( with the lotus halo )
at The Golden Triangle and the ruined temple at Wat Chedi Lhuang ( 750 yrs.old temple ).

We might eat lunch at the border or in Chiang Rai . Then drive back to Chiang Rai and visit the famous white temple at Wat Rong Khoon which constrcted by one of the great Thai artists. Please take a chance to use the clean and supposed to be the most beautiful toliet in Thailand, then visit the Charin - rose gaden to taste homemade fruit pies and rose tea , then an hour drive to the fish lake in Mae Ka Chan to feed thousands of fish in the holy lake ( one of many ways of Buddhism merit makings ). also visit the hot spring nearby .Then drive straight to Chiang Mai.
